Can ordinary developers use it?
Can people who are not specialists build with linked data, or does it stay a tool for experts?

HyperCard showed that ordinary users could author linked information. The semantic web's stack asked more: triples, URIs, ontologies and a query language. Editors, guides and wikis lowered the bar for modellers, and JSON-LD and the Linked Data Platform dressed the data as familiar JSON and REST. In 2018 practitioners still judged the ecosystem too hard for average developers. Language models that write SPARQL are the newest attempt to hide the difficulty.

JSON-LD and Why I Hate the Semantic Web↳ critiques RDF
Days after JSON-LD became a Recommendation, its lead editor writes that better Web APIs, not the Semantic Web, motivated it, and that keeping RDF out of sight was what made it usable. [src]

Toward easier RDF: a proposal↳ critiques RDF
Twenty years on, a long-time practitioner tells the W3C list that RDF is still too hard for average developers, the middle third by ability, and starts a public effort to list why. [src]

SPINACH: SPARQL-Based Information Navigation for Challenging Real-World Questions
Real questions from Wikidata's 'Request a Query' forum, where users ask others to write SPARQL for them, become a test for a language-model agent that writes the queries itself. [src]

- Will language models make SPARQL and RDF invisible to developers?

SPINACH's agent writes queries for real Wikidata questions; how reliably such agents do so is still being measured.

The SPINACH work builds an agent that writes Wikidata queries for questions real users asked on the Request a Query forum.[src]

- Should developers have to see RDF at all?
[src]
Replies to the EasierRDF proposal questioned whether developers are RDF's end users, suggesting systems could hide it behind interfaces instead.
- RDF stays underneath, and developers see plain JSON. JSON-LD
JSON-LD is designed to be usable directly as JSON, with no knowledge of RDF.[src]
- RDF itself is made easier for average developers. Toward easier RDF: a proposal
The EasierRDF project collects the obstacles developers meet and proposes fixes to the standards and tools.[src]

- Language models need knowledge to check against
Puts a language model between developers and the data, so they may never write SPARQL themselves.[src1][src2]
